Not only is the statement not true, but it’s actually the opposite in some cases. Companies always accept resumes and cover letters because they don’t want to miss out on a quality candidate.

Here are some of the top myths about holiday hiring you may hear, but shouldn’t believe.

Myth #1: Companies Don’t Hire During the Holidays

In most cases, a company is going to hire a candidate if the perfect person walks into their office. The holiday season may be slower from a job seeker’s standpoint, but it rarely has an impact on whether a company is hiring. In fact, some companies prefer to hire at the end of the year because they know the candidates who apply will be serious since they are conducting a job search throughout the holidays. Also, the competition is less because people are thinking like you. So take advantage of that and apply.

Myth #2: People Are Too Busy to Network

This is actually the opposite during the holidays for most companies. The end of the year rush can be intense for some people, but there’s always time to network and be social. Keep your LinkedIn profile updated and reach out to business connections when you have a chance. This is a great time of year to connect or reconnect, and you never know when it could lead to an opportunity. People also take vacation during this time of year, which means they may have more time to connect with people. 

Myth #3: Jobs Posted During the Holidays Are Temporary

Some jobs are only temporary to get through the holiday rush, but it’s not fair to make this a general statement. And besides, temporary jobs can sometimes end up being a permanent job if you do the job well. You can always ask the employer if you’re concerned with the type of job being offered, but if it’s not specifically stated, you should assume the opening is for a full-time position. 

Myth #4: Budget Constraints Prevent Hiring During the Holidays

Sometimes a company has extra money to invest at the end of the year, but sometimes it doesn’t. You shouldn’t refrain from writing resumes and cover letters just because you think a company won’t hire you during the holidays. Many companies leave room in their budget for an end-of-year hiring so then they have their staff in place to begin the new year.

It’s hard to believe that Thanksgiving Day is next week. In no time at all, it will be Hanukkah, Christmas, then the New Year.  

This is a season where it’s easy and socially acceptable to coast. Many of your co-workers and clients are going to be out of the office taking their vacations. The mood in the office is generally upbeat and the pace of work appreciably slows down. Most people enjoy the season, but pay scant attention to their jobs and careers. They put themselves on autopilot and glide through the end of the year. They’ll say that they deserve a break and promise to get their act together and into high gear once 2020 commences.

People who have achieved great success in their lives and careers look at this time period very differently than the rest of us. They recognize that there is less than two full months until the year ends and there is still so much yet to accomplish. For them, there is enough time to take proactive steps to improve themselves and enhance their careers and lives. They’ll enjoy the holidays, but won’t frivolously squander their precious time.

Here is what successful people do over the next six weeks.  

  1. They don’t procrastinate. Instead, successful people wrap up any and all of their important, outstanding projects. It’s easy to push things off and blame the holidays. They get things done right now—without any excuses.
  2. Successful people start a list of goals for what they desire to achieve in the next year. They don’t just hope and pray that things will work out. They’ll write down an action plan that focuses on all of the daily steps needed to accomplish their objectives. By writing down their ambitions, it becomes real and they hold themselves accountable to it. If you tell someone about your aspirations, it motivates you further to intensely focus on the game plan, as there will be someone you respect checking in on you.
  3. Motivated people purposely block out all of the extraneous distractions that arise over the next bunch of weeks. They’ll attend parties and family functions, but won’t eat and drink excessively, as they know they need to stay clear headed and on top of their game.
  4. Smart, fast-track and career-oriented people actively turn up the heat on their job search. The vast majority of job seekers put their search on hold during the holidays, as they don’t want to be bothered with ruining their fun. If you are aggressively looking, you’ll stand out with much less competition.
  5. Use this time to refresh your résumé and LinkedIn profile, contact recruiters, check out job boards and invite people out for coffee or a cocktail to pick their brains about potential job openings.
  6. Take advantage of the holiday season’s shopping sales to pick up a couple of new interviewing outfits.
  7. Intelligent people start preparing for their annual review. They’ll gather a list of all their great accomplishments and carefully practice what they’ll say to their boss to secure a raise and promotion.
  8. Forward thinkers contemplate where they are in their lives and what they want to do next. This may entail going back to school, pivoting to a new career or completely reinventing themselves. This time is perfect to seriously contemplate the next chapter of your career.
  9. Successful people are not afraid of constructive criticism and are self-aware. Engage in self-reflection about who you really are. Think about whether or not you’re happy with your life choices. Maybe you will decide to lose five pounds, become more optimistic and positive, treat people better, give to charity or work toward becoming the best version of yourself and the person that you know could be.
  10. Those rare, successful people have a certain mindset. They give thanks to all of the wonderful things they have in their lives. Show appreciation to the ones you love. Express gratitude for everything good that’s happened to you. Forgive, forget and let go of all the past regrets, slights, indignities and bad decisions.

This is just a start and you can continually add to this list. You are now prepared to start the holiday season and enter the new year feeling happy, confident, productive, both mentally and emotionally strong and successful.

The holidays are the time for gatherings and good cheer, and that makes them a natural time for networking. Business is about relationships, and sharing kind wishes and getting some face time can help to strengthen them. Since the season is a busy one, make the most of your connections by creating a plan.

Here are six ideas for effective holiday networking.

CHOOSE OPPORTUNITIES WISELY
Be smart about the ones you attend, says James Cassel, chairman of the independent investment banking firm Cassel Salpeter & Co.

“In a digital age in which we’re losing the human touch, there’s nothing finer than a handwritten note,” says Cassel. “I begin my follow-up within a day or two after meeting people, and I’m careful to include something specific and personal about the encounter, as well as verbiage that reminds the prospect what it is my company has to offer. Sounds simple, but you’d be surprised how many people fail to execute it completely.”

MAKE A LIST
Create a “meet list” of key individuals you’d like to connect with during the holidays and why, suggests corporate connections consultant Judy Robinett, author of Crack the Funding Code.

“Events can be jam-packed with opportunities,” she says. “Narrowing it down in order to ensure you’re being strategic, and maximizing the time you have with these key individuals, will help to ensure you’re making more lasting than fleeting connections.”

If you’re looking for conversations that can further your business, approach them with mentorship instead of profit in mind, she adds. “Mentors can be valuable players in your future success—and possible investors in the future—so building these early bonds can definitely pay off in the long run,” says Robinett.

HELP OTHERS NETWORK
It’s the season of giving, and being a connector is one of the most valuable things you can do for people in your network, says Kevin Hamilton, SVP of marketing at the restaurant technology platform Toast.

“The holidays are a great time of year to canvas your network and connect individuals that you think could be helpful to each other in the New Year,” he says. “This might include employees looking for a potential mentor, clients looking to break into a new region, or colleagues who want to acquire new skills. Use your wide network for good, and connect people to one another in a way that’s helpful, authentic, and meaningful.”

CONNECT ON THE SPOT
With all the festivities and conversations people are having throughout holiday networking events, it can be hard to remember who’s who, says Solomon Thimothy, CEO of Digital Marketing Agency. Instead, keep your phone on hand and take advantage of LinkedIn.

“Download the app and keep it on your home screen so it’s easy to access,” he says. “Then, as you’re meeting new folks, pull up the app and find them. This enables you to make that real-time connection and is an easy access point to avoid their crowded emails so that you’re able to send a more personalized, direct message.”

Added bonus: You might find out on the spot that you have mutual connections that can help continue to drive the conversation, Thimothy says.

BE INCLUSIVE
Winter holidays of Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanza are often recognized, but the employees of cloud communications provider 8×8 use every holiday as a chance to connect with each other.

“We celebrate diversity and welcome all cultures,” says CEO Vik Verma. “If you’re smart and have good values, you’re of great value to us. We like to create an environment that demystifies different ethnicities. We celebrate Christmas and Diwali. We feel like if our employees can be themselves without having to create some act and be somebody they’re not, we create a safe environment.”

Every Wednesday, 8×8 employees get a chance to relax, mingle, and enjoy a catered lunch. “My general philosophy is that people work hard,” says Verma. “We try not to have evening parties that take them away from family. Why create an obligation to stay late for a beer bash? If we can gather at lunchtime, you’re providing value to employees.”

OR JUST WAIT UNTIL THE NEW YEAR
While the holidays are prime for networking, they’re also hectic. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, why not wait? asks Brian Rowe, CEO and founder of Perceivant, an educational technology company.

“December is such a busy and stressful time for everyone, so wait until the New Year to reconnect with current and new customers,” he suggests. “Thinking in this mind-set helps us kick off the year strong and connect with contacts straight away once January rolls around to stay more top-of-mind.”

Rowe has the same philosophy with his employees. “There are enough holiday parties in December. So, to avoid any added stress, we all gather together as a company in mid-January to celebrate,” he says. “This allows us to reconnect, discuss what happened in the previous year, and get excited about what’s coming ahead.”
