What To Do When Your Career Is Disrupted Later In Life. A Stable Job for Life is Arguably a Thing of the Past.

Despite the various proclamations that we are living in an age of increasing footloose behaviors and we are going to have multiple careers throughout our life, the prospect of losing one’s job still has many of the pangs associated with other forms of grief. Indeed, losing your job is perhaps the toughest thing you can ever face, with damage not only in the immediate aftermath but over a prolonged period of time.

Overall, 31% of job seekers aged 55 and older report they have been looking for work for 27 weeks or longer.

Around 50% of American workers over 50 years old are at risk of redundancy. The research, which was conducted by ProPublica and the Urban Institute, grimly tells us that this cohort is being pushed out of jobs held for some time before retirement causing the kind of financial damage that is irreversible.

Acting now

At the later stage in your career, the chances are that you may have developed a degree of financial security, and this can hinder your efforts to reinvent yourself as it removes the sense of urgency that is required to successfully transition into a new career. What is more, you may also be lulled into a false sense of security by the skills and experience that you have built up over the years.

Valuable though these skills may have been in your old career, there’s no guarantee that they will be equally valuable in your new one. This narrow focus and intense specialization may have worked in the past, but careers are changing, and the stability and security that typified the work-life when you were growing up are increasingly being consigned to the dustbin of history.

Now, skills such as adaptability and agility are far more important, with organizations relying heavily on cross-functional teams where collaboration and emotional intelligence will come to the fore. Here are a few things you can do to make a successful transition:

  1. Forget your titles – Chances are that your old career came with a good dose of prestige, with titles and all that came with them attached to your seniority. Those are lovely, but they are holding you back from moving on.  It is far healthier to think akin to a film director who goes from project to project. Your past work was nice, but this is a new you, applying yourself in new ways.
  2. Develop your portfolio – As you will no longer be able to rely on your title to open doors for you, it is important that you start to develop a portfolio of projects to showcase your skills. In this transitionary period, these can be projects outside of work. Not only will they give your life a renewed purpose, but you will almost certainly develop a wide range of invaluable skills too.
  3. Adjust your outgoings – If you have high expenses, it can be tempting to jump into the first opportunity that presents itself, just to get some money coming in, but it is quite likely that this will be a bad choice. If you can build up some savings so that you can go for the right opportunity rather than the first opportunity then you are likely to be happier in the long-run.
  4. Embrace the unexpected – Volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity (VUCA) has become a bit cliched in the business world, but the essence of uncertainty and volatility do nonetheless ring true.  You will need to be agile and open-minded to make the most of your new-found freedom, so consider fresh ways to stretch yourself and develop new skills.
  5. Develop a love of learning – When you achieve a certain level of seniority it is tempting to rest on your laurels, but the world waits for no one, so it is vital that you are learning each and every day. There are countless opportunities to do this, from books, blogs and massive open online courses (MOOCs). You might even find mentoring young people can be a great way to learn from them as much as they from you. Admit where your knowledge has holes and work to plug them.

The chances are, your previous status gave your life a certain narrative, with your role and title key parts of that story. Now, you have the opportunity to craft a completely new narrative, and it is important that you spend time thinking about what that is. When you meet people, this is your point of entry into the conversation. You will be telling this story as your introduction to you to each new person you meet.

A stable job for life is arguably a thing of the past, so the ability to pivot one’s career and adapt to the changes in the market are likely to be valuable skills to learn. If you have to learn them later in your career, then so be it. In this way, the stability in your life comes not from your employer, but from within you, which is an altogether healthier place to be.

If you do not understand why you are doing the work you are doing, it is difficult to understand the purpose of your work. When you work without purpose, you may lose your enthusiasm and the level of quality that is required to succeed.

Ask your manager, “What are this year’s goals for the organization?” “What are your upcoming priorities?” The answers to these questions will help you understand how your role plays a part in reaching your company’s goals and helps to ensure that your efforts continue to meet goals. When you meet or exceed your organization’s goals, you demonstrate value.

2.     Expectations.

You may think you know what is expected of you at work, but are you absolutely clear on expectations? To avoid confusion or misunderstanding, ask your manager what is expected of you. When you are clear about what people expect from you, you will increase your chances of meeting or exceeding expectations.

3.     Flexibility.

Would it benefit your health, family or projects to work from home one day a week or slightly shift your daily schedule to be able to arrive later and leave later? If you think some form of flexibility would help you be more productive with work, inquire about it. Communicate how the change will help you with your work. If you are already demonstrating solid work, it will be easier for you to ask for more flexibility.

4.     Money.

If you want a raise, ask for it. If you need more resources for a project, ask for it. Assuming you are producing quality work, ask for what you need to continue to be the best professional that you can be and produce great work.

5.     A promotion.

If you continue to prove your worth, consider asking your manager for a promotion. Don’t run the risk of not asking and build up resentment that may undermine your work product and impact your relationships with colleagues.

Keep in mind that asking for a promotion, more money and flexibility in one year or a short time span might not be wise. You should ask for what you want, but don’t go overboard. Consider prioritizing what you want in the upcoming year. A successful career is built on years of experience and climbing the ladder. The higher you go on the ladder, the move opportunity you will have to ask for what you want.

Ask about business goals and expectations. Arm yourself with the information to show your worth to your organization. When you demonstrate your worth, you have the leverage to ask for things like flexibility, a raise or a promotion. Questions have answers. Ask the questions to know the answers and see the road that will help you reach your goals.

Your Career: Recent Study Shows Early Career Setbacks Are Key To Long Term Success.

It is logical to deduct that success early on in a career is an indicator of future success, but a new study from Northwestern Kellogg School of Management found the opposite: an early career setback is a better indicator of future success than early achievement.

Scientists who nearly received a significant grant from the National Institutes of Health ultimately published more work than those who barely received the grant. Dr. Dashun Wang, an associate professor of management and organizations at the Kellogg School and a co-author of the study told the Kellogg Insight that in the long run, “the losers ended up being better.”

Give yourself the gift of courage. No one else is going to do it for you. You must be the hero of your own story. There won’t be anyone coming to knock on your door with offers of a great new job. It’s solely up to you to make something happen. Instead of procrastinating, start right now! Fight back against the negative and fearful thoughts running through your mind and forge ahead. Be brave and bold. If you don’t get that job, try for another one. Keep moving forward with determination and optimism. The laws of science say that an object in motion stays in motion. It’s similar in life as your energy propels you forward and attracts people and opportunities to you. Conversely, if you stay still, nothing will ever change and you’ll always have regrets.

We hold ourselves prisoners to our past. Mistakes, poor decisions and bad luck make you doubt yourself and your abilities. You’re afraid to shoot for something new, as you feel you’ll just fail once again. It’s a downward-spiral way of thinking. Keep in mind, this is the season for forgiveness and love.

Forgive and forget all of your former bad decisions, choices and indiscretions. Give yourself the gift of leaving the past in the past. Don’t let the choices you’ve made over 10 years ago define who you are today. Start the new decade with a clean, fresh slate. Let go of past grudges and grievances. People who have achieved great success in their lives and careers look at this time period very differently than the rest of us. They recognize that there is less than two full months until the year ends and there is still so much yet to accomplish. For them, there is enough time to take proactive steps to improve themselves and enhance their careers and lives. They’ll enjoy the holidays, but won’t frivolously squander their precious time.

Here is what successful people do over the next six weeks.  

  1. They don’t procrastinate. Instead, successful people wrap up any and all of their important, outstanding projects. It’s easy to push things off and blame the holidays. They get things done right now—without any excuses.
  2. Successful people start a list of goals for what they desire to achieve in the next year. They don’t just hope and pray that things will work out. They’ll write down an action plan that focuses on all of the daily steps needed to accomplish their objectives. By writing down their ambitions, it becomes real and they hold themselves accountable to it. If you tell someone about your aspirations, it motivates you further to intensely focus on the game plan, as there will be someone you respect checking in on you.
  3. Motivated people purposely block out all of the extraneous distractions that arise over the next bunch of weeks. They’ll attend parties and family functions, but won’t eat and drink excessively, as they know they need to stay clear headed and on top of their game.
  4. Smart, fast-track and career-oriented people actively turn up the heat on their job search. The vast majority of job seekers put their search on hold during the holidays, as they don’t want to be bothered with ruining their fun. If you are aggressively looking, you’ll stand out with much less competition.
  5. Use this time to refresh your résumé and LinkedIn profile, contact recruiters, check out job boards and invite people out for coffee or a cocktail to pick their brains about potential job openings.
  6. Take advantage of the holiday season’s shopping sales to pick up a couple of new interviewing outfits.
  7. Intelligent people start preparing for their annual review. They’ll gather a list of all their great accomplishments and carefully practice what they’ll say to their boss to secure a raise and promotion.
  8. Forward thinkers contemplate where they are in their lives and what they want to do next. This may entail going back to school, pivoting to a new career or completely reinventing themselves. This time is perfect to seriously contemplate the next chapter of your career.
  9. Successful people are not afraid of constructive criticism and are self-aware. Engage in self-reflection about who you really are. Think about whether or not you’re happy with your life choices. Maybe you will decide to lose five pounds, become more optimistic and positive, treat people better, give to charity or work toward becoming the best version of yourself and the person that you know could be.
  10. Those rare, successful people have a certain mindset. They give thanks to all of the wonderful things they have in their lives. Show appreciation to the ones you love. Express gratitude for everything good that’s happened to you. Forgive, forget and let go of all the past regrets, slights, indignities and bad decisions.

This is just a start and you can continually add to this list. You are now prepared to start the holiday season and enter the new year feeling happy, confident, productive, both mentally and emotionally strong and successful.

When I’m coaching people on their careers, many people come to me at a crossroads. They know they are ready for something different but not sure what that is. I call this the Exploratory Stage. It’s a great stage to be in because there are so many options to explore. However, I find most people struggle with it because they want to know, with certainty, what it is they are meant to do next. Us humans don’t handle the in the meantime all that well.

That’s why I’ve listed a few tips for tackling career crossroads below.

Take advantage of being in the Exploratory Stage. This is actually a great time to let your imagination and curiosity take over. Instead of looking for answers, switch it up to looking for possibilities. As adults, we have gotten so caught up in whether or not we are making the right decisions we have forgotten how to be open and receptive to what’s out there. Instead of discounting certain industries, companies or locations, allow yourself to look at everything. After all, you don’t have to do anything. You’re just looking for now. Your goal should be to let your mind wander and see what calls to you.

Go where there is growth. If you’re going through the meantime and sense you’ll be there for a while then why not go where they are paying? At least make sure that you are taking the time to explore opportunities that could also support your financial goals. Check out Glassdoor’s recent reports of 25 Highest Paying Jobs for 2019 and 25 Highest Paying Companies for 2019You’ll find a wide variety of industries and specialties.

Of course pay is not everything, but when you’re in a place that you don’t know where to go, why not start where the pay is good? The reason this is important beyond the money is that where there is job growth there is often change in the direction of company or industry growth. With that comes more opportunities to make your mark and contribute to the future of what can be done.

Be open to different industries and functions. In most, if not all industries, there’s no longer the old fashioned theory that you have to grow up in the industry to be of any value. In fact, having a diverse background in your field can really help you advance and broaden your leadership capabilities. Focus on marketing your transferrable skills like managing others, systems thinking, project management, service mindset, etc. Taking a leap to another industry or different function might just be the shake up you needed to get clear as to what you want your career to ultimately look like and mean.

Don’t count out your current company too soon! They may have that next chapter you need in another function or segment of the organization. Have you really explored all your options? Have you reached out to your manager to even discuss what the possibilities are? And if you feel like speaking with your manager is a dead end, consider connecting with one of the recruiters. They have a front row seat to the opportunities available across the organization.

Breathe. Last but not least, take it easy. It can feel stressful if you put too much emphasis on yourself to know the exact next best step. But if you can sit back a bit and trust your instincts and capability to tackle whatever career challenges come your way, even a wrong turn can lead to an interesting and beneficial experience to add to your résumé.

In the end, if you take advantage of your time in the Exploratory Stage you are bound to find your next career adventure. I have found people that empower themselves to carve out their own path tend to have higher levels of job satisfaction simply due to the fact that they are where they chose to be vs. someone choosing for them.

Some parents choose to stay home for many years to raise kids. Others do so because the cost of childcare would pretty much wipe out any income they’d earn from their jobs. If you’re a stay-at-home parent, chances are that you’d like to get back into the workforce someday, whether it’s in a couple of months or several years. But going from stay-at-home parent to employee is easier said than done, especially if you maintain the former schedule for many years in a row.

In fact, you’ll often hear that the longer you stay out of the workforce, the harder it’ll be to break back in. And in a recent survey from FlexJobs, more than 50 percent of stay-at-home parents took a longer break from the workforce than expected.

If you’re worried that a temporary or extended stint as a stay-at-home parent might wreck your chances of ever being employed again, here are a few things you can do to make yourself a more viable job candidate when you are ready to start working again.

1. Stay in Touch

It’s hard to push yourself to stay connected with former colleagues and professional associates when their days are all about meetings and deadlines, and your routine revolves around watching kids and tending to the many peripheral needs that come with them (think food prep and constant laundry). Still, it’s important to stay in touch with those people because they’re the ones you’ll likely want to reach out to when the time comes to get back into the workforce.

Therefore, set some reminders on your calendar to send sporadic emails or make an effort to meet up with your old co-workers or managers for lunch or dinner every five or six months. It’ll go a long way when you’re ready to ask for their assistance in getting yourself hired.

2. Keep Boosting Your Skills

Keeping your skills current is one of the best things you can do to more easily find a job after taking an extended break from the workforce to raise kids. If you’re able to show prospective employers that you made an effort to stay on top of industry changes and rules, or that you took steps to avoid letting your skills lapse, it’ll send the message that you’re serious about your career and are capable of multitasking. (After all, it can’t be easy to do all of that while also caring for children.).

Continue reading up on industry trends and be sure to do what it takes to maintain your professional certifications. Doing so will most certainly be a nod in your favor down the line.

3. Aim to Do a Little Work on the Side

There’s nothing like a glaring resume gap to lower your chances of getting hired after spending time as a stay-at-home parent. To avoid one, aim to do a little work on the side while you primarily focus on your kids, whether it’s freelancing in your former field or trying something new that you’ve always been interested in. Doing so will not only help your career, but bring in income at the same time.

There’s nothing wrong with taking time away from your career to focus on your family. But if you want to avoid issues breaking back into the workforce, be sure to make an effort to stay connected to your former colleagues, keep your skills updated and, if possible, do a small amount of work so you don’t have an absolute resume gap on your hands.

According to Fractl, if you were to ask Millennials about their parents’ top career mistakes, they would say they had a poor work-life balance (30%).

recent survey asked over 1,000 Millennials about their perceptions of success compared to their parents and identified the top career trends of each generation. Some interesting findings were:

  • Nearly 1 in 4 Millennials say their parents stayed with an employer too long, and 15% think they poorly negotiated salary and benefits
  • Despite being labeled as the burnout generation, Millennials say their parents’ biggest career mistakes are a poor work-life balance (30%)
  • 50% of Millennials say they’re more financially responsible than their parents

Roughly 30% of Millennials are influenced by their parents’ career mistakes. Learning from previous generations’ mistakes can help you get ahead in life. Here are the five golden rules of career success:

1. Negotiate your salary and benefits: It can feel intimidating to ask for a raise, but it can cost you a lot not to ask. As a job seeker, do not stop at the initial offer. Push past the uncomfortable feeling and go for more than what’s first offered. Practice with friends and family then have a talk with your manager where you confidently make the case for a salary increase. Don’t underestimate how significant even a 5% raise is.
2. Stay up to date on industry news and technology trends:  Across generations, nearly 1 in 4 people say their parents fell behind on either the skill set needed for their job, on technology, or both. Reading scholarly journals or news articles about your field can keep you up to date with any changes affecting your profession and can prepare you for them. In this digital age, advancements in technology impact nearly every profession. Be sure to stay current and learn how technology is shifting and figure out ways to adapt.

3.  Further your education:  It’s safe to say that the more educated you become, the more career options and upward mobility you’ll open position yourself for. On your free time, attend seminars to further develop your skills. Ask to shadow someone at work who has the role you’d like to upgrade to. Volunteer for challenging tasks that will really solve problems for your company. These are only a few of the many ways you can continue your education beyond college.
4.   Network, network, network!:   Networking  is an increasingly important component of the workplace, and many career opportunities can come from the people you know. It’s not only a great career rule, but it also enriches your life on a personal level—with more knowledge and social activities. So the next time, you’re tempted to decline an invite, push yourself to step out of your comfort zone. Have lunch with your coworkers and get to know them better. Send cold emails and grab coffee with people you admire. Attend the annual company trip and start a conversation with the CEO. You’d be surprised how many great connections can come if you make an effort.
5. Prioritize work-life balance:  Turn  off your work notifications after leaving the office and carve out time for self-care —whatever it looks like for you. Whether it’s volunteering at a local homeless shelter, reading, or simply spending time alone to reflect on how you’re feeling, prioritize this as it’ll help you achieve a good work-life balance.

#CareerAdvice : #YourCareer – Independence Day Is A Good Time To Free Yourself From An Oppressive Job And Pursue Your Dreams.

My grandparents emigrated to America fleeing persecution. At the time they immigrated, they did not speak any English whatsoever. However, after adapting to American culture, my grandparents learned the language and, ultimately, became a plumber, shoe salesman, seamstress and homemaker.

My parents were both teachers and my dad went on to become a principal at a vocational high school in East New York, Brooklyn. The school taught underprivileged, inner-city kids to work as mechanics for the MTA New York City Transit system, which enabled them to procure stable union jobs with a pension.

As a second-generation American, I started an executive search business, found jobs for thousands of people and earned a handsome living for my family. I’ve had the good fortune of writing this piece for the premiere, iconic business publication, Forbes, and recently founded a startup, WeCruitr.com, which will help job seekers connect with recruiters to assist them with their search. My family is a mix of whites, blacks, Asians, Jews, Christians, heterosexuals and LGBTQ people. What other country offers such endless opportunities and diversity?

It is fashionable today to point out all of the failings of our nation and complain that everything is rigged against you. Sadly, many people feel that because of their color, gender or sexual orientation that they can’t succeed and attain the promised American Dream.

As messy as things can get in the U.S., I’m pressed to see another country that offers our vast opportunities for people to receive an education, start a business or succeed in the corporate world. It’s not easy—in fact, it’s incredibly hard—to succeed. There are always roadblocks, bad luck and people out to take advantage of you, but there is the opportunity for you to at least try your best.

We’re a country founded by pissed off people who didn’t want to bow down to kings and queens or contend with persecution. We argue, fight and disagree with each other. Often times, we’re angry at the status quo and demand changes. That’s what makes us great. The ability to openly disagree with each other and the government and pursue whatever the heck we want to do.

I’d suggest that you spend some time this Independence Day weekend to think about what you’d like to do with your career and life. We hold jobs that we hate, work for bosses that make us miserable, realize that a job or career was selected for the wrong reasons and are desperately unhappy. It’s easy to feel sorry for ourselves.

Look at all the hardships that people had to endure—and still continue to endure—to come to America for its opportunities. There are people literally dying to come into this country. You have no reason to settle for less than what you deserve. If you are dissatisfied with your current circumstances, start planning your independence from your job or career. Fight for the right to be happy and successful.

Despite the naysayers, America offers untold opportunities and that’s why people from all over the world want to come here. Block out all the negativity on social media and in the press and seek out a better and brighter future for yourself and your family. We’re a nation of fighters who don’t give up easily. There’s no reason why you shouldn’t stand up for yourself and pursue a life of wealth, success and happiness. Instead of celebrating, you should take the time to thoughtfully reflect just how lucky you are that you are given the freedom to advance and climb the corporate ladder.

Today, to build a successful career, you need to always be looking for work.

To understand why, let’s start with the big picture. More and more businesses have entered the “gig economy.” While that term, for many people, conjures up images of Uber and Instacart, these types of platform-based businesses are only a small fraction of the overall gig economy.

Increasingly, all sorts of businesses are hiring temporary or contingent workers rather than traditional full-time employees with benefits. NPR reports that one out of every five jobs is held by a freelancer, and that within a decade, contractors and freelancers could make up half the workforce.

They often lack benefits. They’re also often the first to be laid off when an economic downturn comes along, and in most cases they cannot collect unemployment.

Meanwhile, even people who have full-time jobs with benefits are often scraping by. A recent Bankrate survey found that 45% of workers have a “side hustle,” including 43% of full time workers. The most common reason is that they need the money to get by.

Meanwhile, in another survey, 78% of workers reported that they are living paycheck to paycheck.

As co-founder of Steady, a startup assisting people in creating a stable monthly income, I hear from users all the time who share stories of their struggles. Some are young workers who aren’t making enough to live and pay down their massive college loans. Others have been in the workforce for decades, and always thought they’d have a job until retirement — only to find that their jobs are being replaced by contractors or, in some cases, automation.

They come from a wide range of industries and report that their hours are cut back, their side hustle isn’t paying as much as it did, or they’re suddenly in danger of being laid off. Some are from high levels of a corporate hierarchy. In fact, a LinkedIn analysis found that traditional employees have lost their lock on managerial roles in an organization. Contractors now “work in higher seniority roles a year sooner than peers in non-contract roles on average.”

Stability is becoming a relic of the past. The deck is stacked against workers. And while we do need new laws and policies to help give people some guarantees and improve their pay, the most important step individuals can take to protect themselves from the tumultuousness of this reality is to always be looking for new, better opportunities.

I recommend making it a daily habit. Every day, take action toward discovering new opportunities.

For starters, get your profile up on any and all jobs boards that include the kinds of positions you may be interested in. Keep updating your profile with your latest achievements, accolades, and recommendations. Do the same with your resume. (Check out “the anatomy of a perfect resume” for ideas.)

Set up notifications for all the relevant jobs boards as well. Take five minutes each day to look at what positions have just been loaded up. It helps to move quickly if one interests you, and it’s also a matter of educating yourself. The more you look at the kinds of positions opening up at different companies, the clearer a picture you’ll get of the job market.

Perhaps most importantly, take the time to consider and analyze your skill set. Many people don’t realize the full scope of their skills, or how well those skills can transfer from one field to another. (See how an opera singer discovered that his skills could help make him a great sales leader.) Berkeley offers tools to help you determine yours.

Once you’ve done this, look into how other people with skills similar to yours have progressed in their careers. LinkedIn can be very helpful for this. Look at the skills of people in your network, and ask them about their career progressions.

And if there are any “dream jobs” that interest you, reach out to people who currently have those jobs and ask them how they got there. Often, you’ll find that people are happy to give advice.

You owe it to yourself to always chase a better professional situation — more hours, more security, better benefits, and higher pay. By taking a step in that direction every day, you’ll be on your way.
